La Croix Romane was added to the Dubard family’s wine estates in 2008. The family members, who together make up a skilful team renowned throughout the Bergerac wine region for over 30 years, wanted to undertake a brand new challenge. Their plan was to bring together technical abilities acquired both at university and on the ground with the high quality terroir of Lalande de Pomerol, in order to further enrich their range of wines.

Bordering both Pomerol and St Emilion, the Lalande de Pomerol vineyards are situated on a fabulous gravelly mound containing varying amounts of clay.
The vineyard is made up of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are closely planted (around 6000 vines per hectare), and trellised in the Guyot system. Yield control, the mainstay of quality, consists of a series of operations carried out throughout the year, such as bud removal and canopy management, in order to maintain and to improve the quality potential of the year’s crop. We also perform leaf plucking and green harvesting when the grapes begin to change colour, allowing the better-developed grapes ripen even more fully.
To obtain healthy grapes whilst preserving the environment, we have developed an extensive knowledge of vine parasites and the various sprays available. We used this knowledge in conjunction with a close-up observation of the vines, resulting in rational and environmentally-sensitive pest control.
We also began a complete restructuring of the vineyard as soon as we took over the estate, beginning with the replacement of missing vines.
In the cellar, we bought smaller stainless steel vats, and installed a temperature-regulation system on all the vats. We also raised the proportion of ageing in new French oak barrels to 30%.
